Environ. Microbiol. Rep.
A collaborative study conducted by the Laboratory of Veterinary Hygiene, Kitasato University, and our collaborators in Aomori Prefecture has been accepted for publication in Environmental Microbiology Reports.
This study was initiated following the isolation of an Aeromonas bacterium
from a bottlenose dolphin that died suddenly.
The bacterial isolate was provided to our laboratory, where we performed
whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomic analyses. Genome-based
analyses identified the isolate as Aeromonas dhakensis and demonstrated
that it was genetically closely related to previously reported A. dhakensis
strains. T
he isolate also carried several known virulence-associated factors, including
genes associated with toxins and secretion systems.
However, no virulence-associated annotations specific to the dolphin-derived
isolate were identified, and genomic analysis alone could not explain why
this strain was associated with a severe and fatal infection in the dolphin.
As a next step, we plan to evaluate the virulence of this isolate using a mouse infection model and further investigate the mechanisms underlying severe A. dhakensis infection.
We will share more details once the article is published. Stay tuned for our future research!
